The story of Cinderella follows the fate of young Elka (Lily James), whose father, a merchant, remarries after the death of her mother. Elka loves her father very much, so she tries to be friendly to her new stepmother (Cate Blanchett) and her two daughters, Anastasia (Holliday Grainger) and Drizella (Sophie McShera), and does everything she can to make them feel comfortable in their new home. But when Elka's father dies unexpectedly, she finds herself at the mercy of her new jealous and cruel family. Soon she becomes an ordinary servant, perpetually covered in ashes, whom The Others mockingly call Cinderella. Despite the cruelty she is forced to face, Elka does not lose hope and is determined to follow her mother's last wish to always be "brave and kind." She refuses to succumb to despair or despise those who treat her badly.

And then there is a handsome stranger she met in the woods. Elka, who has no idea that he is actually a prince and not just an apprentice from the castle, feels that she has finally met her soul mate. Soon after, it seems that luck may finally smile on her. All the girls from the surrounding area are invited to a ball at the royal palace, and Elka is looking forward to meeting the charming Kit (Richard Madden) again. However, her stepmother forbids her from attending the ball and maliciously tears her dress. As in all good fairy tales, help is at hand, and a magical fairy godmother (Helena Bonham-Carter) appears who, by transforming a pumpkin and a few mice, changes Cinderella's life forever.
