The film, based on the book All Quiet on the Western Front, was also filmed in the Czech Republic, specifically in Prague (the opening shots of the German city), at Sychrov Castle (the diplomat's castle) and finally at the not-yet-reconstructed Hořín Castle near Mělník, where shots of the military infirmary were filmed.
