Aerospace engineer and owner of a thriving business Ted Crawford watches his wife Jennifer meet her lover. When the woman later returns home, Ted hugs her, tells her he loves her, and then shoots her in the head. He carefully covers his tracks, takes a bath and burns his clothes. Meanwhile, the police arrive. Ted lets only Lieutenant Rob Nunally into the house and confesses to the murder without hesitation. The shocked detective realizes that his mistress is the one who was shot. While the police arrest Ted, a doctor is called in and discovers that Jennifer is still alive. However, her brain is irreversibly damaged and she will never regain consciousness. The case is assigned to an ambitious young prosecutor, Willy Beachum, who has won every case so far. He has the murder weapon and the confession. A seemingly simple case gets complicated when Ted pleads not guilty and gives up his defense attorney. Then Detective Flores announces that Ted's gun is not the murder weapon. Another dramatic twist occurs when Ted reveals that the detective was his wife's lover and he only confessed because he feared for his life. The judge is forced to rule the statement coerced and therefore invalid. Willy is angry with his supervisor because he prepared poorly for the case. Ted seems to have the case firmly in hand and achieves an acquittal...
