After three years spent in the trenches of World War I, Esben returns home to his beloved wife Kirstine and son Karl. However, the hardships of war have changed not only him, but also his family. The charming German officer Gerhard has taken his place at the head of the family table and is doing everything he can to win Kirstine's heart and become Karl's father. While the young family is struggling to adjust to the new situation, another blow comes – Esben must return to the front. The almost broken man cannot cope and deserts. After a failed attempt to cross the border into neutral Denmark, he is forced to hide in the attic of his own house. The bonds of love and trust between the spouses are stretched to breaking point, while Esben watches from his hiding place as his family falls apart before his eyes and decides to do everything he can to keep them together.
