Axel Blackmer (Johnny Depp) has a strange obsession—he loves fish. Not only is he fascinated with them, but he also makes a living tagging them and observing them. Still, what fascinates him the most are the conditions under which they dream. What Axel doesn’t love are cars, but his uncle Leo Sweetie (Jerry Lewis) would love nothing more than having Axel take over the family car business in Arizona. Reluctantly, Axel heads to Arizona to both check out the dealership and attend his Uncle’s wedding. While there, he meets Elaine Stalker (Faye Dunaway), a rich widow who is quite older than him and the two begin to fall for each other. Equally interesting as Elaine is her step-daughter Grace (Lili Taylor) who constantly plays her accordion around her turtles she keeps as pets while battling depression and suicidal dreams. Her ultimate dream is to die and be reincarnated as a turtle, whereas her step-mother’s dream is flying a grand flying machine. Because Axel is in love with Elaine, he tries to help her make her dream a reality, but each time they build the machine, Grace destroys it out of jealousy. The story follows the two women’s crazy dreams and outlandish adventures as Axel tries his hardest to give them exactly what they dream—however impossible they may be.
