The Count of Monte Cristo is a classic story that tells the tale of an innocent man who was wrongly imprisoned by his best friend, and how once freed from prison uses his intelligence to create an elaborate, brilliant strategy for revenge against those who betrayed him. Edmond Dantes is a honest, respectable young man who plans to live a peaceful life and marry the beautiful Mercedes. However his best friend Fernand wants Mercedes for himself, and deceives Edmond and frames him for being a traitor where he's imprisoned for six years. After his imprisonment, he returns as the Count of Monte Cristo.

The movie is an adaptation of the novel by Alexandre Dumas published in France between 1844 and 1846. In 1815, Edmond Dantès is the young and successful captain of the merchant ship "The Pharaon" . But his success creates jealousy. Accused of supporting Napoleon Bonapart he is unfairly imprisoned in the castle of If, an island off the coast of Marseille. After 18 years of captivity, Edmond manages to escape. Thanks to a fellow prisoner he discovers the treasure of the Monte Cristo Island. With this fortune, he becomes the powerful Count of Monte Cristo, and is determined to seek revenge.
