US Army soldier John Rambo (Sylvester Stallone) returns from the hell of the Vietnam War to his homeland. But the political situation has changed in the meantime, the young man meets with nothing but incomprehension, and one day he is arrested for vagrancy by the sheriff of a small foothill town (Brian Dennehy) and taken to the local police station. He manages to escape, however, and fights a fierce battle for his life with his pursuers in the nearby mountains.
