A new constable, Maresciallo Carotenuto, arrives in a sleepy village tormented by the Second World War. He soon learns the Malovenkian mood, where everyone knows everything about everyone and no one escapes. As a bachelor, the Constable receives all the more attention as he catches sight of the beautiful but hopelessly poor Riot. However, after discovering that his subordinate, the carabinieri, is in love with her, he looks out the window and turns his attention to the midwife, Annarella. The film received a sequel just a year later, titled Bread, Love and Jealousy, including the cast.
