Jack the Ripper - in the fall of 1888, he committed five heinous ritual murders. He was never caught. The film's directors, twins Allen and Albert Hughes themselves, declare of the film, Allen: "The victims of Jack the Ripper were not humanized. We want to breathe life into them. They weren't just victims. They were human beings." Albert: "We are very tempted to use a familiar and legendary story and use our imagination to give it a different dimension."

The dirty, mean streets of 1888 London - drugs, prostitution, alcoholism and street crime. Five impoverished prostitutes strike the first blow. The body of one of them is found in a pool of blood with her throat slit. The spectre of Jack the Ripper stalks London. Life-torn Inspector Fred Abberline (Johnny Depp) survives day by day using opium to quell the agonizing memories of losing his wife and child. He is put in charge of a gruesome murder investigation. But the brutal killer continues his horrific ritual. The murder victim's girlfriend, Mary Kelly (Heather Graham), refuses to cooperate for fear that the young inspector is just out to take advantage of her like most men. His honesty and politeness, however, eventually breaks her distrust. She confides in him her desire to return to Ireland, where she grew up as a little girl. The Inspector is aided in his uneasy investigation by the formidable Sergeant Godley (Robbie Coltrane), who is also a support in his personal life. The threads of the investigation lead to a killer with surgical skill. Abberline concludes that the murders are part of a sinister plot by the Freemasons, who are orchestrated from behind the very royal court.
