Aspiring New York reporter Sue Charlton wants to write a story about Australian Mike Dundee, who survived an attack by a large crocodile. She sets off for the Australian town of Wakabout Creek, where she is met by Dundee's partner Walter Reilly, who runs a small tourist office with Mike. In a local pub full of quirky guests, he tells her a story about a crocodile, embellished, of course, which is duly commented on by the people around him, and then Mike Dundee bursts in with a stuffed crocodile under his arm, and before the reporter can recover, he pulls her onto the dance floor and during the dancing and constant tiptoeing, manages to ground the man who was making fun of him with his fist. It is certain that if she accepts his offer to show her the place where it all happened for $2,500, she is in for a series of unusual experiences. Dundee will tranquilize a bull that blocks their path, catch a snake that was slithering towards her with her bare hand, chase away a bunch of drunken hunters out to hunt kangaroos, and save her from a crocodile that attacks her by the river.

In the process, he continues to tease her, and the always confident reporter unexpectedly loses her usual confidence in his presence and begins to succumb to his peculiar charms. When she discovers that Hunter has never been to any major city, she convinces him to go to New York with her as part of her reporting. After a brief hesitation, Mike agrees. In New York, the pair are greeted by Richard Mason, who is not only a colleague of Sue's but also her friend. Although Mike tries to be friendly to everyone, he feels uncomfortable in the crowded city and the luxurious hotel suite where he is staying. During a dinner together at a fancy restaurant, the smug Richard makes his superiority obvious to the hunter, but he doesn't take it lying down and with one well-aimed shot he "calms down".

He then improves his mood in a small pub, where he is taken by Danny the taxi driver. In the following days, Sue has more extraordinary moments with Mike. She witnesses Mike easily apprehend a fleeing robber as he chases away a pair of young robbers who attempt to rob them of their money. She quickly becomes convinced that she can not only handle herself in any situation, but with her natural charm, she can win everyone over to her side. And she feels she has fallen in love with him as well. Just then, Richard Mason publicly announces their engagement. Sad Mike, who has also fallen in love with Sue and who is slowly growing tired of the staid ways of the snobbish elite, decides to leave.
