Movie or TV Series Plot
Susan Morrow (Amy Adams) has everything she's always wanted, and yet she finds herself trapped in life. The curator of a modern art gallery tries to fill her inner emptiness by displaying shocking exhibits, and she spends her nights keeping vigil in an empty golden cage in a luxurious L.A. home from which her partner seems to be running away from her with conspicuous frequency. The manuscript of the novel Nocturnal Animals, written by her ex-husband Edward (Jake Gyllenhaal), could be the perfect cure for insomnia. If his story wasn't so disturbing... Its protagonist is Tony (also Jake Gyllenhaal). A contented middle-aged man takes his wife and teenage daughter on a family vacation to New Mexico, but it is interrupted by a chance nighttime encounter with a trio of rapists on a deserted Texas highway. Tony doesn't stand a chance against the odds, and thus is unable to prevent the kidnapping of his loved ones. The next day, with the help of a cynical detective (Michael Shannon), he sets out on the trail of the criminals, but the chances of rescuing his wife and daughter seem slim. Far from this drama, in a sleepy L.A., an increasingly frightened Susan realizes as she reads it that the cruel text is a parallel to her relationship with her ex-husband. That it is an unusual revenge for how badly she once hurt him.
