Charles Duchemin is the chief editor of France's most prestigious restaurant guide. He insists in teaching his son, Gérard, how to become a fine food critic, as he hopes the latter will take over the guide after his father's retirement. Yet Gérard is not as dedicated as his father to gastronomy. He would like to spend his time working for the circus where he secretly plays a clown at night. In parallel, Duchemin happens to be in competition with Jacques Tricatel, CEO of a giant firm of industrial food. Tricatel is on the verge to buy several restaurants which had been decorated by the guide Duchemin. The two men, representing two very diverse conceptions of gastronomy, agree to face each other in a live tv show. But before the show, Charles and his son manage to sneak in the factory of the Tricatel industry.
