Molly Bloom (Jessica Chastain) was destined to become a world champion in bump skiing. But fate willed otherwise and after a fall and injury, she leaves for Los Angeles to study. However, to make a living, she starts working as a drink delivery girl at an expensive club. It's also where she meets Dean Keith (Jeremy Strong), who hires her as an assistant. As it soon turns out, Dean organizes secret poker games for the sweetest elite in and around Hollywood: actors, athletes, producers, directors, singers, and anyone else who doesn't mind spending a few tens of thousands of dollars for an evening.

After a falling out with Dean, Molly decides to run the tournament on her own: instead of the seedy, smelly basement of a music club, she'll hold the game in the luxury suite of an expensive hotel, with top-notch refreshments and a professional croupier. The cream catches on immediately and Molly's reputation as a poker queen quickly spreads around the neighborhood. But only until Player X, whose identity Molly never reveals, blows her and her jealousy of the poker party as quickly as she did Dean's.

Molly moves to New York with the same scenario, but sets the bar even higher. Unsurprisingly, the Russian mafia takes notice and makes their displeasure clear. Molly also makes a crucial mistake under the pressure of her surroundings that takes her over the edge of the law. It's up to charismatic, and extremely expensive, lawyer Charlie Jaffey (Idris Elba) to get her out of trouble. And the situation won't be easy, as Molly doesn't want to reveal what the prosecutor wants her to do in exchange for her freedom...
