Clément Mathieu, a music teacher, is hired in a boarding school for difficult boys, Fond de l'Etang (Pond's Bottom). Mathieu is confronted to the oppressive and tyrannical methods of the headmaster, Mr Rachin. As he refuses such methods, he attempts to initiate the boys to music by trying to create a chorus, despite Mr Rachin's strong skepticism. Little by little the daily life at school changes and becomes more and more relaxed. Even the headmaster seems to be changing. Until a new boy, Mondain, arrives to Fond de l'Etang. More ruthless than the others, rude and violent, he will unfortunately tear apart the harmony Mathieu had finally managed to bring to the school.
