Movie or TV Series Plot
Legends of gentleman robbers continue to be told years later in France about Arsene Lupin, in America about Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid, and in England about the couple Plunkett and Macleane, who actually lived in the mid-18th century. The son of director Ridley Scott, who went on to follow in his family's footsteps as a professional, made a historical adventure film of the same name about them, though he treated the facts rather loosely. Will Plunkett is a bankrupt apothecary, James Macleane an impoverished officer. They meet in the notorious Newgate prison, and because they would both like to live the high life, they agree to work together. With the help of Macleane's connections, they infiltrate the upper echelons, start robbing on a large scale and, thanks to the gallant treatment of their victims, gain a great deal of attention and fame. However, the stunts of the gentleman robbers cause such a stir that the British Parliament debates them, and Deputy Chief Justice Chance is ordered to hunt them down at any cost.
Filming locations
The film was shot extensively in the Czech Republic - including in Prague, at the Plasy Monastery, the castles at Kačina near Kutná Hora, Troja and the former women's abbey at Doksany. From the Plasy monastery, the filmmakers chose to shoot in the "summer refectory" (dining room) of the convent, the upper floor of which was used for the parliament and later as a courtroom, which accommodated more than 250 extras. The lower part served as a gathering place for the grasp of the villain Chance, the main negative hero. The granary building, or rather its roof, served as a hiding place for the robbers and its exterior as their prison.
