Pete "Maverick" Mitchell (Tom Cruise) loves flying fighter jets to death. So much so that for over thirty years he has successfully resisted promotion within the US Air Force, because that would have taken him out of the cockpit and into a warm office. Maverick has also always been a magnet for trouble, which is also quite incompatible with a military career. However, he is a brilliant pilot, perhaps the best there is, and so he is offered the chance to become an instructor for elite fighter pilots in the Top Gun program, preparing them for a mission that falls into the Mission Impossible category. In addition to this, Maverick will also have to handle a difficult personal mission. One of the pilots he is supposed to prepare for action is Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of his friend and navigator Goose. Fans of the first Top Gun know that Goose died when he unsuccessfully ejected from an uncontrollable fighter jet piloted by Maverick. And his son blames him for his father's death. Maverick does not want Bradley to suffer the same fate as his father at any cost. At the same time, he realizes that the likelihood of one of the pilots not surviving the planned air operation is not small.
