Hana, a Canadian nurse, lost her fiancé and then her best friend during the war. She believes she is cursed and devotes all her care to a severely burned patient who has lost his memory. His fate touches her deeply, and she decides to care for him in the ruins of a Tuscan monastery. The patient gradually remembers his Hungarian origins as Count László de Almásy and how he worked on an international scientific expedition mapping the Sahara in Egypt before the war. There, he also fell head over heels in love with Katherine, his colleague's wife. Katherine's husband discovered the love affair and caused a plane crash. He killed himself, but Katherine was injured. Lászlo betrays his comrades to save her and gives the German soldiers strategic maps in exchange for a plane. However, he arrives too late for Katherine, and when he is carrying her body away, he is shot down. The spy Caravaggi also comes to the monastery to find Hana and László. He wants to take revenge on László for his betrayal, which affected him personally. Hana has a brief love affair with Kip, an Indian pyrotechnician who works on defusing mines in the area.
