Austrian princess Marie Antoinette was still almost a child when she became the wife of the young French king Louis XVI, in order to satisfy the political interests of both the French and Austrian ruling dynasties. But even Versailles, with its proverbial splendor, cannot hide the fact that Marie Antoinette feels very lonely in the court atmosphere of scandals and intrigues. Another blow comes when she discovers that the king is unfaithful to her with one of the ladies-in-waiting. The frustrated queen seeks solace in endless, unrestrained excesses, which, however, bring down the wrath of both the nobility and the people upon her. And that ultimately seals her fate.
