It is a pre-war period and orphans of Polish Jews are beginning to move to France. Marcel is recommended by his family as their educator because he is interested in art and acts like a mime. Increasing tension in Europe will force Marcel to join the French resistance. The situation in France results to a plan to save hundreds of children by pretending to be a musical ensemble and escape to Switzerland through the forest.
